Out & About
Wiveliscombe
The historic market town of Wiveliscombe, known locally as "Wivey" is situated on the edge of the Brendon Hills. Only 11 miles from Taunton Wivey is the gateway to Exmoor National Park, an area of outstanding natural beauty, and an ideal centre for walking and cycling.
To the north east of Wivey are the Quantock Hills, which are also designated an area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, and to the south are the Blackdown Hills
Wiveliscombe's location enables easy access via the M5 to coastal resorts such as Dawlish Warren, Exmouth and Sidmouth, as well as providing an ideal stopover for those traveling further south to Cornwall. On the North coast Lynmouth is an hour's drive away by way of Dunkery Beacon, whilst Minehead, Watchet and Dunster are around thirty minutes away.
The area has a wealth of history with evidence of human activity dating back to Neolithic times. A short walk around the town you will soon discover some more recent buildings of interest including some of the legendary 30 public houses that once graced Wivey. For those wanting to discover more of the history of the town then they may be interested in the recently published book “Wiveliscombe a History”.
